Once a hollow form has been turned for the project the design is laid out in pencil.
When the pencil layout is finalized the pattern is traced over with a pyrography burning tip.
Now that the boundaries have been set the texturing can begin. This texture is applied with a small blunt impact tool.
This texture is applied with rotary cup burrs of various sizes.
Once the texturing is complete the movement of the pattern can be appreciated.
My hollow forms like to have a finial. This finial is composed of African Blackwood and Silver. It is made to fit a collar of African Blackwood that is attached to the form.
The assembled hollow form and finial. You can see how the finial tip mirrors the shape of the hollow form but in miniature.
The final step is the application of India ink to the form. This allows the texture and pattern to speak together with a unified voice.
